Chapter 22: The Ninth of March

Dane's POV

On the ninth of March, I woke at three and her side of the bed was cold.

I lay still for one breath, the old fear flooding in, and then I heard a spoon against a bowl in the kitchen.

She sat at the table in my flannel shirt with a cup of tea and a slip of paper face down in front of her.

The kitchen light was off, and the window behind her was the color of ink.

"I'm okay," Callie said, before I could ask.

"All right."

"I woke up at two. I've been sitting here an hour. I'm saying it out loud, so you'll know I'm not hiding it."

I sat down across from her.

"Say the rest."

"Today is the day." She turned the tea in her hands. "I don't want to be alone, and I don't want to be watched. I know those don't fit together. I need them to."

"What do you want?"

She smiled, a little crookedly.

"Pancakes. Teddy at the table. The clinic at ten." She took a breath. "And after that, I want to go to the old house. Before it closes on Friday."

I didn't say anything for a moment.

Whatever I felt, I put it in my pocket where she couldn't see it.

"Then we're going to the old house," I said.

The doctor's door opened at eleven-forty, and Callie came out into the waiting room with her eyes red and her mouth steady.

I put down the magazine.

"She changed the plan," Callie said. "She added a line."

"What does it say?"

She handed me the page.

At the bottom, in the doctor's neat hand, it said, Dane is on this page.

I read it twice.

Then I folded it into her wallet myself, because my hands needed something to do.

The old house was cold and smelled of dust.
