Chapter 9: Dinner Guest

My mother said nothing more that night.

She pressed one finger to my lips, shook her head, and went back up the stairs.

In the morning she made pancakes.

She laughed too loudly at everything Trenton said and never once looked at me.

I ate three and watched her hands.

They would not stop moving.

I had spent five years learning to read the people who held me by the way they carried a tray.

My own family carried their trays exactly the same way.

At ten my father drove out to the dock with a fishing rod, whistling.

At eleven Trenton took a call on the porch and walked off down the gravel road, talking low.

His jacket hung on the hook by the kitchen door.

The key ring was in the pocket.

I put it in my sleeve.

I had, in a way.

Every meal for five years I had palmed a spoon and counted what the guard did not.

The hall closet opened on the third key.

The bin sat on the top shelf.

My phone lay under a stack of towels, and the screen lit when I touched it.

Seventeen messages.

Nine were from the detective.

*Mr. Thayer, call me when you can.*

*Mr. Thayer, Hank Rudd was released last night on bail.*

*Mr. Thayer, bail was posted by a law firm. I'm told it is your family's.*

I read that one three times.

My knees went soft, and I sat down on the closet floor with the phone in both hands.

The law firm was my father's.

It was the same gray-haired man in the same clean shoes who had stood in the mud on the night I was rescued.
