Chapter 6: The Men Who Poured Water

The car that came for us at noon was long and black, and the driver held the door.

He was young, with a gold tooth, and he had carried a tray of glasses at my banquet.

I knew that because he had set one of them down at my husband's elbow.

"Signora," he said, and lowered his eyes.

"You poured the water."

"Yes, signora."

"Did you know who he was?"

"Everyone knew who he was," the driver said. "Except you, and your brother."

Santo, beside me in the back seat, looked out of his window and said nothing.

The house stood on a cliff forty minutes west of the city, white and plain, facing the sea with its back to the road.

There was no gate, only a lemon grove and an old iron bell.

Inside, the long kitchen was full of men, a dozen or more around the tables.

Some I recognized from the banquet, in waiters' vests.

One was the old cook who had been my brother's caterer for years, and he saluted me with a wooden spoon.

"The Signora Corvaia," Gaspare announced, from the head of the table with a piece of bread in his fist.

Chairs scraped back in unison.

"Please sit," I said. "Please. I didn't sleep. I can't be stood up for."

They sat.

A plate of eggs appeared in front of me, and then bread, and then a small glass of something strong that I did not drink.

"The crust," Gaspare said, pointing his bread at me. "Your crust, signora. Every Sunday for a year it went to this table. We cut it in eleven pieces."
