Chapter 24: Inside the Gate

"It's for the baby," Gia said in my ear. "The doctor gave it to me. For his heartbeat."

She said it fast.

Too fast.

I knew, because I had lied to that man for ten years, and you never say it fast.

There was a tearing sound, thread giving way.

Gia cried out.

Then Renato's breath, right on the microphone, like he was holding it up to his mouth.

"Annalisa."

Sandro's head came up.

"I know it's you," Renato said. "Nobody else would think of a seam. You always did the mending."

The assistant U.S. attorney turned around in the front seat with his mouth open.

"Here's how this goes," Renato said pleasantly. "Your sister is sitting on the floor of my son's room. She's crying. She's very upset. Women in her condition shouldn't be upset." A pause. "Come and get her. Through the kitchen, like you did in October. Come by yourself. If I see a car on my drive, I'll know you didn't care enough."

A crunch.

Static.

Then nothing at all.

I pulled the headphone out of my ear.

My hand was perfectly steady. That frightened me more than shaking would have.

"No," the marshal said from the driver's seat, before I'd said a word.

"I didn't ask yet."

"I can have a team on that gate in twenty minutes."

"And then what?" I said. "You go in tonight, every capo at that dinner is in his car by ten fifteen. One of them's flying to Florida by breakfast. The warrant's for tomorrow."

The assistant U.S. attorney rubbed his face with both hands.

"She's right," he said into his palms. "God help me, she's right."
