Chapter 19: Names Allowed

I pushed the bedroom door shut with my heel and pulled him in by his shirt.

He kissed me before I could say another word.

It was nothing like the study.

There were no rules, and nobody was pretending to be a stranger.

"Say it," I said against his mouth. "Say my name."

"Mara."

He said it low and rough.

"Again."

"Mara. Mara."

My knees went weak, and he caught me under the hips and lifted me against the door.

My bag hit the floor with the deed in it.

I did not care.

I got my fingers into his hair and kissed him until we were both gasping.

"Ask me something," I said.

"What?"

"Anything. You were never allowed to ask. Ask."

He rested his forehead against mine.

"Were you going to tell me?"

I laughed, and it came out wet.

"On the anniversary," I said. "That night. I had the watch in my hand when the phone rang about the attack."

"I had a speech. I'd practiced it in the car."

"What did it say?"

"That I was Aldo Bellandi's daughter, and I'd come to take everything from you," I said. "And that I'd fallen in love with you first, by accident, and that I didn't know what to do about it."

His eyes closed.

"Say that last part again."

"I love you," I said. "I'm furious, and I don't forgive you, and I love you. All of it's true."

He made a sound I had never heard from him.

He carried me to the bed and laid me down in the white light from the window.

He undid my blouse button by button, and he kissed each inch of skin that came out.

My collarbone. The hollow of my throat, where the pearls had been.

My breasts, through lace, and then without it.
