Chapter 5: The Council

On Friday I walked into the council room at noon and sat in the chair at Vincent's right hand.

It was Serena's chair.

She had moved to the far end of the table with her ledgers and her reading glasses, and she gave me a small nod when I looked.

Seven men sat along the table.

Paolo was nearest the door.

Five capos filled the rest of the table, and every one of them found something to look at on the wood.

Vincent stood at the head.

"Before we start," he said, "my wife has questions. You'll answer them."

He sat down.

He did not look at me.

Under the table, his knee was not touching mine, and I knew exactly how far away it was.

I laid my hands on the table.

"Who else knew?" I said.

Nobody asked what I meant.

"Who else knew what he was putting in my coffee?"

"Nobody," Vincent said. "Two people."

"Who?"

"Paolo. And my grandmother."

A capo at the end coughed.

Paolo stood up.

He was gray in the face, and I saw his hand on the back of his chair shake once before he pushed it still.

"I knew," Paolo said. "From the first month. I'm the one who carried the bottle from the pharmacist to the house. I'm sorry, Antonia."

I looked at him for a long moment.

He had come to our wedding. He had given a toast. He had put an arm around my shoulders at Christmas and told me I would make Vincent a father someday.
