Chapter 12: The Recording
I read the first page of the order twice.
It was only four paragraphs long, and it said that on the sworn word of Leandro Bastiani, he was the biological father of an infant born that evening to Delfina Garavani.
It asked the court for a paternity test within forty-eight hours, and for supervised custody until the result.
It did not mention me.
"Where am I in this?" I said.
"You are not named," the lawyer said, with a small, careful smile. "The mother of record is Mrs. Garavani."
"I'm the mother."
"You'd have to prove that, Mrs. Bastiani. In court. With the father's testimony."
"The father is the man who forged my name."
"Allegedly," Leandro said.
He had not taken his eyes off me.
"Don't fight it, Cece. A child belongs where his blood is. You can see him, I'll see to it. You'll be at the christening in the front pew. All I ask is that you come home."
Teo took a step forward.
"The child belongs to my wife," he said. "In law and in this hospital. He has my name on his bracelet."
"A name isn't blood, Teo."
"No. It's more than a name, and you know it, or you wouldn't be standing here at midnight with a lawyer."
"Take it down a notch, both of you," the lawyer said. "There are security cameras."
"I know where the cameras are," Teo said.
Neither of them moved.
Behind us, the elevator opened.
Delfina's mother pushed the wheelchair out onto the marble, and Delfina sat in it with the blanket slipping off her knees and a hospital bracelet on her wrist.
