Chapter 22: The Arrangement

Delfina stood at the nurses' desk on the third floor with a pen over a discharge form.

Her mother held her coat, and the man in the gray suit held the clipboard flat for her.

The charge nurse sat behind the desk with her hands in her lap, and she did not sign anything.

Teo and I walked down the corridor with my own lawyer between us, in her grey suit, carrying a thin folder.

Delfina saw us and her pen did not move.

"Don't come closer," she said. "I'm his mother. The court says so, and this form says so."

"The court says a lot of things," I said.

"Don't you throw that back at me."

"I'm not here to take him out of your arms," I said. "He's in a crib and you're standing at a desk."

Her eyes went to the glass wall of the unit, where the second crib sat under its warm lamp.

"I need a minute with him," she said.

"Nobody is stopping you."

"You will, after I sign."

"After you sign," my lawyer said, "there is nothing to stop. Mrs. Garavani, your husband has put you away before the council. Leandro Bastiani is stripped of his seat. The woman whose embryo you carried is standing in front of you. If you walk out with that child tonight, he goes into a house with no father, no money and no name."

"I have a name."

"You have your mother's."

Delfina's mother closed her eyes.

"Mi figlia," she said. "Per favore."
