The old boss gave us the family room and five minutes.

One guard stood outside the door.

Teo stood on the other side of him, with his arms folded, and he did not look happy about it.

Leandro took the recliner I had held my son in and sat on the edge of it.

I stayed on my feet by the window.

"You look tired," he said.

"I am."

"You haven't eaten."

"Don't tell me what I haven't done, Leandro."

He nodded slowly.

"I would have put you first," he said. "You have to know that. I didn't want any of this."

"You put a freezer first."

"I put the table first. She was going to burn it down, Cece, and the tape was the match. I picked the one thing I could replace."

"Replace."

"You had lost two already. I told myself you'd never use them."

"The tank was my child."

"I know that now."

"You knew it in January."

He looked at his empty hands.

"I explain things," he said. "I've always been good at that. I'm trying to explain this one, and it isn't coming out."

"It isn't going to."

He was quiet for a moment.

"The old man is sending me to a cousin in Phoenix," he said. "Alive, with a car, and a job at a restaurant that doesn't know my name. Come with me. You can keep the books. We'd start over."

I stared at him.
