Chapter 5: The Coat Room

Leandro stopped at the edge of the Garavani table and buttoned his jacket.

"Teo," he said. "I'd like a word with my wife."

"She isn't at the table for you," Teo said.

"Then she can tell me herself."

I stood up before they could say anything worse.

Half the room was watching, and a hundred phones were within reach.

"Not here," I said. "The coat room."

I walked away from both of them, across the marble hall to the long room with the brass racks, and Leandro followed me in.

It was empty except for the attendant's chair, and the attendant was gone.

Two hundred coats hung in rows, and the air smelled of wool and perfume.

Leandro closed the door behind us and leaned against it.

"What did Delfina say to you?"

"That she's sorry."

"Is that all?"

"Why? What should she have said?"

He didn't answer. He crossed the room in three steps and stood very close, and he looked down at my face.

"Come home tonight," he said quietly. "Come to Mama's on Sunday and apologize for the scene. Do it with the cousins watching. I'll tell you what I owed her."

"You'll tell me?"

"I'll tell you every word."

I almost wanted to say yes.

I had wanted to know what he was hiding since the first time he said it.

"You want an apology from me," I said. "For leaving a man who told me in front of his mother that he gave away a baby."
