Chapter 7: Saint Brigid's

Saint Brigid's Fertility was on the fourth floor of a brick building on Michigan Avenue, with a fish tank in the waiting room and a basket of knitted hats by the door.

I had sat in that waiting room more times than I could count.

I had never once been there on a Monday morning with a Garavani.

"I'll stay out here if you want," Teo said at the reception desk.

"No. You told me you wanted to know."

"I do."

"Then you come in."

The receptionist asked for my name, and I told her.

She looked at her screen for a moment too long.

"The doctor can see you," she said. "Both of you?"

"Both of us."

The doctor's office had a desk, two chairs and a photo wall of babies in tiny hats.

She was a small woman with grey hair who had held my hand after my second miscarriage.

She did not stand up when I came in.

"Cecilia," she said. "I wondered when you would come."

"You wondered?"

"I've been waiting since January for someone to tell me what I did."

My knees felt weak. I sat down.

"I want my file," I said. "The embryos. Everything with my name on it."

"You're entitled to it. You and your husband are the joint owners."

"Then show me what my husband did."

She pulled a folder from the drawer, which had been ready, and laid it on the desk.

She turned it to face me.

The first page was a release form.
