Chapter 9: Dessert

Leandro's voicemail was ten words long.

"Sunday dinner. Come and say it to my face, Cece."

I played it twice in Teo's kitchen, then deleted it.

On Sunday at four o'clock I walked into Agnese's dining room for the second time in a month.

This time I did not come alone.

Rina walked on my left in her best black jacket with her chin up.

On my right was a tall woman in a grey suit carrying a leather folder. She was my lawyer, and Rina had found her at the bar on Wednesday.

Teo came behind us, and he closed the door.

Agnese sat at the head of her table with eleven relatives down both sides.

Nobody had expected a lawyer.

"This is a family dinner," Agnese said. "You have no business bringing strangers to my house."

"I'm family," Rina said. "I've been family for five years. You never once learned how to say my name."

"Sit down, all of you," said Leandro.

He did not stand.

He sat in his place at the foot with a glass of red wine in front of him and didn't touch it.

There were three empty chairs.

I took the one nearest the door, and I did not sit in my old chair at his right.

"I brought dessert," I said.

I set a white bakery box in front of Agnese and opened the lid on a lemon cake.

Then I laid a thick envelope beside it.

"Those are divorce papers," I said. "My lawyer drew them up on Thursday. You'll be served here, in front of everyone, so nobody can say you didn't know."
