Chapter 11: What Papou Holds
Damian Karras waited until Lena's breathing slowed and her hand went slack on his chest.
Then he lifted it, laid it on the pillow and slid out from under the sheet.
She frowned in her sleep and turned toward the warm place he had left.
He stood watching her for longer than he meant to.
She had never looked so small in his bed.
He found his trousers on the floor, took the phone from the nightstand and went down the stairs without turning on a light.
In the study he knelt by the safe behind the desk and put in the code.
The certificate lay on top of the contracts.
It was the copy with the raised seal, his signature a hard black slash and Lena's beside it, small and careful.
He had read it so many times the creases had gone soft.
He took it out and set it on the blotter, next to the ring she had left on the first day.
He had not been able to move the ring.
The phone buzzed in his hand.
He answered it before the second ring.
"You are awake," said Stavros Karras. "Good. Old men do not sleep either."
"What do you want?"
"I want my grandson to remember what he owes."
"I remember."
"Do you? Tonight you stood at my table and said no to me in front of forty people."
"I said the truth."
"You said a very brave thing, and I am proud of you." The old man's voice was warm, as it always was when it was cruelest. "Now we will see what the truth costs."
Damian shut his eyes.
He had been seven when his grandfather first taught him this voice.
You take a thing from a man and thank him for it, Papou had said, handing him a stolen watch.
"There is no paper," Damian said. "I withdrew it myself. If you want a copy on Monday there's nothing to copy."
