Chapter 11: Against the Window
He knocked at nine.
I was sitting on the end of the bed in the dark with the window open and my phone dead on the quilt.
"It's me."
"I know," I said.
"I'm coming in."
"Yes," I said.
He came in and shut the door behind him.
He didn't turn on the lamp.
The moon was up over the valley, and it laid a long silver square across the floor.
He stood at the edge of it with his hands open at his sides.
"I want to say it properly," he said.
"Then say it."
"I told Todd because he was my best friend for twenty-four years. I told him because I was sitting in a truck with a ring in a cupholder and I didn't know how to breathe. I didn't tell him so he'd go and propose to anyone." His voice stayed low and even. "I didn't think of you at all in March. I'd met you once."
"And after?"
"After, I saw you laugh at the rehearsal dinner. Your father told the story about the oyster boat. You laughed with your whole face, and you put your hand on his arm."
I looked up.
"And I thought, that's the one. And I thought, that's his. And I went outside and stood in the parking lot for ten minutes." He swallowed. "I didn't tell anyone, because it wasn't mine to tell. It still isn't, unless you let me."
My throat hurt.
"I never called you the quiet one," I said.
"No?"
"I said it to her at the table. She asked what I thought of the best man. I said, he looks like a man who stays."
He did not move.
"I said you looked like someone who stays," I said. "She repeated it to you wrong."
