Chapter 13: The Last Night
On Saturday night I turned on every lamp in the room.
There were three of them, and a bare bulb over the washstand, and I lit the lot.
Brennan sat against the headboard in his shorts and watched me do it.
"Are we looking for something?" he said.
"Each other."
I climbed onto the bed and sat cross-legged in front of him, in the yellow light, in his gray shirt and nothing else.
I had a pen from the desk and the back of the inn's breakfast menu.
"March ninth," I wrote, and held it up. "She gives you the ring."
"Yes."
"March eleventh. She makes the folder."
"Yes," he said.
"March thirtieth. Todd gets down on one knee and thanks her for filming it. March thirty-first. They add me to the folder."
I stopped writing.
"He wasn't thanking her for the filming," I said. "He was thanking her for the pier."
Brennan took the menu out of my hand and read it twice.
His jaw worked.
"Twenty-one days," he said.
"Nineteen from the folder."
"I held the ring for all of them. I could have said one sentence to you at the rehearsal dinner."
"You could have," I said.
"I know." He set the menu on the nightstand, face down, very carefully. "I'm not going to tell you it was nothing."
"I don't want you to."
I pulled my knees up and looked at the wall.
"I need to say the stupid part," I said.
"Say it."
"For five months you kept her secret. She cried, and you did what she asked. I keep thinking that if she calls you at the airport, if she cries into your voicemail, you'll go."
He said nothing for a moment.
Then he reached out and took my chin and turned my face toward him, and he did not let go.
"I've had her cry at me for two years," he said. "I know the sound. It comes before she asks for something."
