Chapter 7: Two Lakes
Kirsten's POV
The road to the lakes climbed through hydrangea hedges as tall as the car, blue and pink and wet with fog.
Brennan drove the little rental with one hand on the wheel and one hand on my thigh.
He had not said a word in ten minutes.
He did not need to.
I was in a sundress with nothing under it, and I had been aware of that since the inn.
At the top there was a gravel pull-off.
Below it the whole crater opened out, with two lakes side by side in a green bowl.
One was the color of sapphire and one was the color of grass.
The mist was breaking up in pieces.
There were no other cars.
"Stop here," I said.
He pulled in and cut the engine.
For a moment we sat there with the windows ticking in the cool.
"It's beautiful," he said.
"I wasn't looking at the view."
He turned his head.
I unbuckled my seat belt.
"I told you last night I'd give you something this morning," I said. "You gave me the whole morning. I owe you."
"You don't owe me."
"I want to."
He took a long breath and put both hands flat on the wheel.
"Say it, then," he said. "In plain words. I'm not touching you until you do."
