Chapter 6: The Raid

My father's voice came across the yard.

"Rodrick MacAlister! I've come for my daughter!"

Behind him, the Henshaw trucks fanned out across the road with their headlights on.

Men and women got out of them, thirty at least, standing at the edge of the light.

I knew some of their faces.

I had danced with them at the Gathering.

"That's a truce breach," the lean man said quietly. "Armed wolves on MacAlister land."

"He's her father," Rodrick said. "The law lets him knock."

He opened the front door and stepped out onto the porch, and I went out behind him with my bow in my hand.

Nobody told me to stay inside.

My father looked at the bow.

His face worked, and for a moment he was only a tired man in a good suit.

"Tegan. Come home."

"You hid a killing for nine years," I said. "You signed me over at dawn, and now you're standing on a porch with thirty Henshaw wolves asking for me back."

"I made a mistake."

"Which one?"

"The paper." His eyes slid away from mine. "Dalton showed me. He says the MacAlisters kept you against your will, and the Council will back him. If you come home tonight and finish the Rite, none of this has to go any further."

"And if I don't?"

He did not answer.

Behind him, a Henshaw wolf in a black coat shifted his weight and took out a folded sheet of paper.

I saw the bank stamp on it from forty feet away.
