Chapter 4: The Gate

"Open it," Lucan said to the guard.

The gate's iron doors swung inward, and the rain came with them.

Brock walked in at the head of twenty Silver Creek wolves, soaked to the skin and smiling.

He stopped ten feet from the steps and spread his arms.

"Orla," he said. "Baby. Come home."

I stood at the top of the steps beside the Lycan King and did not move.

"You called me ugly on the internet," I said.

"It was a joke."

"You signed me away on a napkin."

"Also a joke." He laughed, and the wolves behind him laughed with him, a half beat late. "You know me. I get drunk and stupid at the Blood Moon. Everyone knows that."

"Then why is there a thirty thousand dollar bet in the pack chat?"

His smile twitched.

"That was for fun."

"Forty wolves put money on me crying in a bathroom."

Nobody behind him said anything.

"Sire," Brock said, turning his head to Lucan with a respectful dip of his chin. "You've been very gracious. But this is a misunderstanding between mates, and a mate's mark comes before an IOU. Moon law says so."

"Moon law says a mate's mark is the holder's, if the mate keeps it," Lucan said. "You stopped keeping it when you signed."

Brock's jaw tightened.

"She's mine," he said. "The mark's on her shoulder. Everyone saw it go on."

"I rejected you," I said.

"You can't reject me on Sunday in a lunch hall."

"I did it in front of two hundred wolves."

"A rejection needs the Alpha's witness. I'm the Alpha." He grinned again, smaller this time. "I didn't hear a thing."

A few of his wolves shifted their feet.

I came down two steps.

Lucan said nothing behind me, though I could feel how much he wanted to.
