Chapter 9: The Moot
The Moot of Alphas met in a round hall with no windows and twelve stone chairs.
Sorcha sat on Brogan's left in a gray dress her mother had altered overnight, with the crescent mark showing at her collar.
He had barely spoken to her since the armory.
He wore his black glove and his black coat, and his face was as hard as the chair.
Across the circle sat the Alpha of Ironwood with Luna Margaret behind him and Corbin at his shoulder.
Corbin's cheeks were hollow. He did not meet her eyes.
At the center of the circle stood a plain black stone no taller than a man's knee.
The Moot Speaker, an old woman in a gray hood, laid her hand on it.
"Anyone who speaks over the oath-stone cannot lie," she said. "Alpha of Ironwood. State your grievance."
The Alpha stood.
"My Lords. Sorcha Ashdown is a wolf of my pack. She was raised on my land, trained in my hall and promised to my son. Days ago she was lured away by Alpha Greaves of Blackmere while her bond to my heir was still raw."
A mutter went around the circle.
"I ask that she be returned to Ironwood by the law of the Moot."
"The law is clear on stolen wolves," said an Alpha with a gray braid. "Alpha Greaves, how do you answer?"
"She was not stolen," Brogan said. "She was severed. Your own son's mouth cut the bond in front of three hundred witnesses."
"Then she is a severed wolf and belongs to nobody."
"She belongs to herself." Brogan did not raise his voice. "She chose Blackmere under the old law."
"A girl of twenty-two, in fever, in the dark," the Alpha of Ironwood said. "She had no idea what she was agreeing to."
Sorcha stood up.
She had not planned to.
Every eye in the circle swung to her.
