Chapter 11: Her Father's Kitchen
The Halvorsen cattle guard is eight steel pipes laid across a ditch at the edge of my father's land.
The Reinholt rider was sitting his horse beside it with a notebook open on his knee.
It was a Sunday afternoon, clear and hot, and the sagebrush smelled of rain that hadn't come.
I stopped the truck at the guard and turned off the engine.
Rod sat beside me with his hands on his knees.
"You don't have to do this," I said.
"I know," he said.
"I can walk in alone. I'll get Dad's saddle and come back."
"You could," he said.
"Einar wants you on that page, Rod," I said. "If you cross, he gets the water."
"He's wanted the water for fifteen years," Rod said. "He's going to call it with or without a page."
He opened the door.
I got out on my side and walked to the front of the truck, and he came around and stood next to me.
The rider had gone red to the ears.
"Sir, I'm supposed to write down-"
"Then write," Rod said.
He took off his hat and held it in both hands.
He was a big man standing in the hot light at the edge of a place he had not entered for two years.
"Marit," he said.
I looked at the gate, and at the lane, and the white house at the end of it with the porch my father built.
"Come in, Rod," I said. "I'm asking you."
He stepped onto the first pipe.
The steel rang under his boots, once, twice, eight times, and he stepped off the last of them onto my father's road.
