Chapter 9: High Camp
The tent was barely big enough for the two of us and a heeler.
He had put the dog out of it with a word.
High Camp sat in an elk meadow above the tree line.
The tents were pitched in a ring, and the cattle were bedded on the slope below.
It was cold enough to see our breath.
He zipped the flap and knelt over me on the sleeping bags with a headlamp turned down to a glow.
He began to undress me with all night to do it.
"Slow," I said.
"Slow," he said.
"I want slow tonight."
"Tell me when you want something else," he said.
He took my boots off first and then my socks.
He held each of my feet in his hands and pressed his thumbs into the arch until I groaned.
He worked up my calves.
He undid my jeans and eased them down my legs, kissing the inside of each knee as it came free.
My shirt went over my head.
My bra followed, and he laid the flat of his hand between my breasts and just held it there.
"You're shaking," he said.
"It's cold," I said.
"Is it?"
"No," I said.
He smiled, a real one, slow and crooked in the dim light, and he bent and kissed me.
It was a long kiss.
His tongue moved against mine, unhurried.
His hand slid down over my ribs to my hip and back up again, and every nerve in my body woke.
I pulled at his shirt.
He sat back and took it off, then his jeans, and the cold air made him shiver and he laughed softly.
"Get in," I said, and held the bag open.
He got in.
We lay on our sides facing each other with the sleeping bag over us, skin to skin, and for a minute we just breathed.
His erection pressed against my belly, thick and hot, and I reached down and wrapped my hand around him and stroked him lazily.
He closed his eyes.
"That's not slow," he said.
