Chapter 23: Whichever Door

I drove Corbin's truck to the cabin on the old logging road because it was the only place nobody had ever planned anything.

It was four in the afternoon.

The stove was cold.

I sat on the bed and looked at the quilt where I had slept, and I didn't light anything.

I heard him on the porch before I heard the door.

"I walked," Ewan said. "Eleven miles. I thought you'd want the truck."

"I wanted you to stay at the lodge."

"I know."

He came in and shut the door and did not sit.

"Say it," I said.

"Say what?"

"Whatever you walked eleven miles to say."

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"He used you," he said. "I won't pretend he didn't. I'd have strangled him in that hall if I wasn't already kneeling on his hearth."

"Good."

"And he's eighty-one and dying, and you're the only person he's ever loved."

"Don't."

"I'm not telling you to forgive him."

"Then what are you telling me?"

"That I'll be at whichever door you walk through." His voice cracked. "Go back, or don't. I'll be there."

I laughed, short and ugly.

"That's easy for you. You didn't grow up in that house."

"I grew up in that yard."

"You weren't his."

"No," Ewan said. "I was the old Alpha's. And his boy exiled me the night you left, and your grandfather could have stopped it, and he didn't. I have a few reasons of my own to want that old man to answer for something."
