Chapter 5: The Eighth Name
I don't remember arriving at Crescent Keep.
I remember burning.
I remember ice packs, and a stone ceiling, and a woman's voice saying, "Hold her, she'll hurt herself."
I remember someone holding me.
Three days went by.
Every time I surfaced, Kieran was there.
In the chair by the bed. On the floor by the fire. Once, asleep sitting up with my hand still in his.
On the third night the fever broke.
I opened my eyes and knew where I was.
A huge bed. A window full of stars. A tattooed arm resting on the mattress next to my hip.
Kieran lifted his head.
His eyes were red rimmed. His stubble had grown in dark.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi."
His shoulders dropped.
The door opened, and a gray-haired woman in healer's green came in with a tray.
"The healer," Kieran said. "She's awake."
"I can see that." The healer set down the tray and pressed two fingers under my jaw. "Do you know what's been in you, girl?"
I shook my head.
"Wolfsbane. Small doses. Every day, for years." Her mouth thinned. "Enough to keep a wolf half asleep. Enough to make a strong girl look weak and sickly."
I stared at the ceiling.
Every morning for ten years.
Genevieve at the stove before dawn, handing me the chipped blue cup.
"Drink it all, Rosie. It's for your nerves."
I had thanked her.
Every single morning, I had thanked her.
"It's leaving you now," the healer said. "That's the fever. That's your wolf waking up and fighting her way out."
"Nyx," I whispered.
