I took them up the ridge the next afternoon, because I asked them to.
I had not meant to ask.
I had meant to go alone again.
Instead I stood in the cabin doorway with snow on my boots and said it out loud.
"Come up with me. I want you to meet him properly."
Nobody joked.
We climbed the ridge path in single file.
Remy went first with the shovel, and Alexis came last with a thermos.
Hugo walked beside me with his hand under my elbow on the ice.
The cemetery sat in a ring of old spruce, forty graves under the snow.
Etienne's stone was the newest.
It was gray granite with his name cut deep and the dates beneath, and the earth in front of it had not finished settling.
Remy cleared the snow from the base with the flat of the shovel.
He stood there a long moment with his hat in his hands.
"I found you late," he said to the stone.
His voice was low and level.
