Chapter 5: One Hand at My Waist

Cormick did not move his hand from my waist, and neither of us said anything for a while.

"Tell me what you smell," I said at last, because the quiet had started to feel like a decision.

"Rain on cut grass," he said. "Bread. Something warm under that I don't have a word for."

"Bread?"

"You were in the kitchen of the east dorm this afternoon. It's in your sleeve."

"Pip made toast," I said. "She burns everything."

"Then it's burnt toast," he said gravely. "It's the best thing I've smelled in three years."

I laughed before I could stop it.

He opened his eyes, and for a moment he looked almost young.

"We'll start with the opening figure," he said. "I take your left hand, you turn under my arm, and we both bring the wolf to the shoulders. Slowly. You set the pace."

"I always set the pace. It's the only one I have."

"Good. Then I'll follow it."

He lifted my hand and I turned under his arm.

The wolf came up in me as it always did, gradually, a warm weight gathering along my spine.

I held it at the shoulders.

I felt Cormick's change begin a half-step behind mine, waiting for me, and then settling into the same rhythm.

His hand stayed at my waist, and his shoulders went broad and dark under the lantern.

For the first time in my life, I did not feel like the slowest thing in the room.

The pace was mine, and he matched it.

We turned together through the figure, and again, and a third time without a word.
