On the day of the wedding, Domenico gave me the seat by the door.
He had put it at the head table himself, with his own chair beside it.
The place card said, in his small capitals: ROSA. NEAR THE EXIT. I'M NEXT TO YOU.
"I'll take it," I said.
"I would hope so," Domenico said.
The Vitale banquet hall held three hundred and four guests, and we had spent a month on the seating chart.
I watched it work.
At table twelve, directly under the speakers, sat the cousin's husband who had complained about the linen.
He was the happiest man in the room.
He was deaf in one ear and he liked the bass.
At table fourteen the seven widowed great-aunts sat in black, in a line, with their handbags in their laps.
The Cicero uncle and the Berwyn uncle each left his table at the same moment, for the bar, at the same distance.
They arrived together, reaching for the same bottle, and shook hands before either of them knew it.
Seven great-aunts sighed in unison.
"We have forgiven them," said the one who taught Domenico his catechism. "Don't tell them."
