Chapter 12: The Sleeve
I did not sleep, and at dawn I walked out to the dike with my coat buttoned to my chin and the arm still in my head.
The crew had come in the night before.
Twenty or so of them stood on the gravel by the pump house in waders and canvas jackets, drinking coffee out of paper cups.
The first gate was open, and reservoir water poured through it into the nearest bog.
It was the start of the flood.
By the end of the week the whole marsh would stand a foot deep and the berries would float.
Kasper was reading out the safety list from a clipboard.
Eero held a gauge over the water, and Ansel stood at the back with the radio in his hand and his sleeves buttoned.
I saw him see me.
He did not smile.
His face went wary and then careful, and he looked away across the marsh.
Soren climbed onto the bed of a flatbed truck and clapped his hands.
"Morning, everybody!" he called. "Before we start, a word. You all know what day it is."
