Chapter 19: Four in the Morning
Signe's POV
I came home from my shift at half past eight on Monday morning and found Ansel at my mother's stove with a spatula in his hand.
The kitchen smelled of butter and coffee and hot iron.
He wore a flannel shirt, rolled to the elbow, and he had flour on one cheek.
The house was empty.
My mother had gone to the school, my stepfather and Kasper were out at the pump, and Eero and Soren had been on the bog since five.
"You're on a half day," I said.
"I'm making you pancakes."
"I'm not hungry."
"I know." He turned. "Sit down anyway."
I stood in the doorway in my scrubs with my bag on my shoulder.
I had been awake for twenty-six hours.
At five that morning, a retired machinist in room four had died with his daughter holding his hand, and I had held the other one.
It was a good death.
They are almost all good deaths, when you are there, and I had learned not to mind.
I minded this one.
I don't know why.
Ansel looked at my face and set down the spatula.
He crossed the kitchen and took the bag off my shoulder and put it on a chair.
He put his arms around me, scrubs and all, and held on.
I let my forehead rest against his chest.
"Bad night?"
"A good death," I said. "I just want to feel something alive."
"All right."
"I want it to be you."
"It's always going to be me," Ansel said.
I tipped my head back.
His gray eyes were very close.
"The pancakes are burning," I said.
"Let them."
He turned off the burner without taking his eyes off me.
Then he lifted me by the waist and sat me on the kitchen table.
