Chapter 6: The Comfort Tonic
The fever came down to forty-one by four in the morning, and Kuzunoha insisted on standing.
"Sit," Haruna said.
"There's a patient."
"There's a pharmacist. Sit down."
Kuzunoha sat on the stool behind the counter with her hands folded and a faint, wry look on her face.
"You're very bossy when you're worried," she said.
"I'm bossy all the time. I'm worried now as well."
The door opened.
A young man in a hoodie stumbled in, grey-faced, and leaned on the counter with both arms.
He was a tanuki, Tsukumo whispered, a raccoon-dog spirit who did deliveries and carried a bag of leaves in his pocket.
He had been sick for three days.
"Fever, cramps, I can't stop shaking," he said. "I went to Hakuro's clinic yesterday. He gave me a tonic. It felt great for an hour. Then it got worse."
"Show me the bottle," Haruna said.
He took a small blue glass bottle out of his hoodie pocket.
The label read, "Heron's Comfort Tonic. For what ails you."
Haruna pulled out the cork and sniffed.
It smelled of syrup and something faintly bitter underneath.
She took a drop on her finger and touched it to her tongue.
Sugar water, a little honey, and a sedative herb she could name by the numbness it left on her gums.
"What did he tell you was wrong with you?" she asked.
"He said it was nothing. A little cold. He said I'd be fine by morning."
"Did he examine you?"
"He looked at me and smiled and said it was a small thing."
Haruna put the cork back in the bottle.
"Okay," she said. "I'm going to tell you what's actually wrong, and it isn't nothing."
