Chapter 13: The Name on the Record

The clerk read the trustee's name into the record.

Gideon Wren was on his feet before she finished the last syllable.

Chen turned from the clerk to him.

'Explain to this chamber why your office opened that account,' she said.

Gideon did not answer her.

He straightened his lapel pin and looked past her toward the chair.

'I invoke my standing as elder,' he said. 'The hall owner's registered-agent record will be read into this proceeding.'

A murmur moved along the benches.

The room stopped looking at Alex.

Caspian stood.

'You were asked a question,' he said. 'Why did your office open an account that was later used to exile an innocent man?'

Gideon turned to face his nephew.

'Your title search on this building,' he said. 'It was canceled only after the request reached my office.'

He let that sit.

'The chamber may draw its own conclusion about what you found and chose to bury.'

Caspian stayed standing.

His jaw worked once.

'I canceled it because my office was told the hall was already under review by yours,' he said. 'I have that letter.'

The chamber stirred.

Gideon smiled.

'Then produce it,' he said. 'When the review begins.'

Caspian sat down.

Alex watched the alpha's hands close on the edge of the table.

That was the cost. A letter he could not lay down today.

Alex kept his eyes on the chair.

He had spent three years gone learning which questions cost more to answer than to leave alone.
