Chapter 17: The Choice After

Caspian waited for Alex to meet his eyes before he moved.

Alex gave him nothing to read. He kept his hand flat on Caspian's wrist and did not shift his weight.

The thread still burned gold between them, thin and bright at both pulse points.

'Before we go further, tell me one thing you need from me tonight that has nothing to do with the bond,' Caspian said.

His voice came out lower than he meant it to.

Alex looked at him for a long moment.

'Stay under my hands,' Alex said. 'Do not move unless I say.'

Caspian nodded once.

'Then I won't move,' he said.

The gold thread flared hard at Alex's wrist.

Alex kept moving.

He did not go still the way he always did. He did not wait it out. He set his palm harder against Caspian's chest and drove his hips down.

Caspian made a sound he could not hold back.

'You didn't stop,' Caspian said.

'No,' Alex said.

'Good.'

Caspian's hands stayed where Alex had put them.

Alex watched his face the whole time, the way he had watched it before, cataloging what Caspian gave away and what he didn't.

'Let me see your face when it happens,' Caspian said.

Alex's jaw tightened.

Then he turned his face up.

He let Caspian look at him. He let him see all of it, the strain, the heat, the way his mouth went slack when he stopped holding it shut.

Caspian's breath came apart in his chest.

Alex finished first, by his own choice, and Caspian followed him a moment later.
