Chapter 6: The Offer Caspian Brings

The black car stopped at the curb without a sound, and the door opened before Alex had taken two steps past it.

Caspian Wren unfolded from the back seat into the bright midday light, and the bond thread at Alex's wrist snapped gold and hot, pulling toward the alpha like a living thing.

Alex kept walking.

'Alex.'

Caspian's voice was low, steady, the register that had once made a room of seventy pack members go silent without being asked.

Alex stopped. Not because of the voice. Because the thread had gone from a pull to a burn, and he wanted to see what Caspian would do when he stood still and let it blaze.

What Caspian did was look at him.

The guarded brown eyes went unguarded for a heartbeat, the composure dropping away so completely that Alex could see the man underneath. Then it reassembled itself, and the alpha of the Ironveil City pack was standing on the sidewalk in front of the council building, offering something.

'I want to make you an offer,' Caspian said.

Alex said nothing.

'The exile record is held in a sealed archive. Only the pack alpha can unseal it.' Caspian paused, as if waiting for Alex to react. 'If you come in quietly, give a statement to the internal review, and accept a supervised reintegration, I will personally push to have the record amended.'

He said it like it was mercy.

He said it like Alex had spent three years waiting for exactly this.

Three years gone.

Alex looked at him. The thread at his wrist was still burning gold, bright enough that a woman passing on the other side of the street turned to look, then looked away quickly.

'You want me to give a statement,' Alex said.

'Yes.'

'To the internal review.'

'Yes.'

'And accept supervised reintegration.'

Caspian's jaw tightened. 'It would be a structured process. You would not be alone in it.'

Alex almost laughed. He did not. He had learned, in three years, exactly when a laugh was a weapon and when it was a tell.

This was not the time.

'You think I came back for this,' Alex said.

Caspian did not answer.

Alex let the silence sit between them. The thread pulsed, gold and insistent, and he stood still and let it hurt. It was not the worst pain he had endured. It was not even close.

'Let me be clear about what you are offering,' Alex said. 'I give a statement. That statement goes into a review process that you control. I accept supervision. That supervision puts me under pack authority, which means under your authority. And in exchange, you amend the record.'
