Chapter 19: The Loan

"Reimbursed," Maya read, off my phone, at seven in the morning, over burnt toast. "To whom?"

"It doesn't say."

"It says 'the party of record.'"

"That's who paid the hospice."

"Brent paid the hospice," Maya said slowly.

I put my head down on the kitchen table.

"He lent me the money," I said. "I signed the note. He wrote the checks straight to the hospice. He told me that was easier."

"So the insurer paid the reimbursement to the man who wrote the checks."

"Three months ago."

"And he called in the loan anyway."

"Fourteen days," I said into the wood. "Ten now."

Velun sat across from me with a mug in both hands.

It was his first coffee.

He had taken one sip, gone very still, and drunk the rest without comment.

"This is an unholy thing," he said. "I would like another."

"You're going to be insufferable."

"I intend to be."

Boots hit the porch steps, a lot of them.

Gus came through the back door without knocking, in his yellow slicker, with a pillowcase in one fist.

Behind him came the old crabber from the café and the young deputy in his own coat.

After them came neighbors I'd known since I was in a car seat.
