Chapter 15: The Iron Fist's Offer
Hong did not draw, and he did not bow.
He stood in the lantern light at the Pavilion gate with his hands open at his sides.
Ja-heon had never seen the Iron Fist look so much like a tired man.
Seon-woo came down the steps and stopped an arm's length from him.
Ja-heon stayed at his shoulder.
"Captain Hong."
"Pavilion Master."
Hong's eyes slid to Ja-heon and away.
"I came alone.
"The Chief does not know I am here.
"If you cut me down, no one will hear of it until morning."
"I do not cut down men who knock," Seon-woo said.
"Say it."
Hong breathed out through his nose.
"I am carrying an offer.
"It is his, not mine.
"I was told to say it exactly."
He lifted his chin and recited.
"Give the Alliance the old Blood Lord and the husband.
"Alive.
"The Chief will say the Crane was deceived and then rescued.
"The Pavilion keeps its mountain, its seat, its Seal and its name.
"Nobody asks what was in a packet.
"Nobody asks about grain."
He shut his mouth.
It was the cleanest offer Ja-heon had ever heard, and he saw Seon-woo hear it too.
The Chief was not asking for blood.
He was asking for a trade, with a smile, as he had traded for twenty years.
"And you?" Seon-woo said.
"What do you say?"
"It is not my job to say."
"Hong Gang-mun."
Hong's jaw worked.
"I saw the black square on the sacks," he said, low.
"I saw my own riders shoot at a sick man after I called a halt.
"I have been the Chief's fist for eleven years.
