Chapter 9: The Toast

The kitchen girl was lying behind the stables with an arrow through her neck.

Ja-heon found her an hour after dawn, when the grey light had just reached the bottom of the wall.

She was seventeen.

He knew because he had asked her once, over a bowl of pickled radish in the kitchen yard, and she had told him so proudly.

She wore a thin red thread tied around her left wrist, the kind a person could mistake for a hair ribbon.

She had been bringing him plum pits for two years.

She had put the last one in the dates and chestnuts on his bridal bed.

Ja-heon knelt in the mud and closed her eyes.

"Ja-heon."

Seon-woo had come around the corner in a clean white coat, with his hair tied up and his face composed for the feast.

He stopped.

He looked at the girl, and at Ja-heon, and at the long grey-fletched shaft standing out of her throat.

He crouched beside Ja-heon and touched the feathers.

"Goose," he said quietly.

"Grey goose feathers, tied with black thread.

"That is an Iron Bow arrow."

"She delivered the slip.

"She was one of ours."

"She was shot an hour after you left the gate."

"Yes."

"Someone wanted her silent before she could say who sent it."

Ja-heon could not speak.

Seon-woo put his hand over Ja-heon's on the girl's cold shoulder.
