Chapter 18: Kolaches
The note under my windshield wiper was written in German script on the back of a church bulletin.
Thursday, nine o'clock, St. Mary's hall. Bring the vet.
Cade read it over my shoulder in the farmhouse yard and handed it back.
"Men don't go to the Verein coffee," he said.
"It says bring the vet."
"They'll skin me."
"They'll feed you," I said.
The church hall smelled of coffee and warm dough and floor wax.
Sixteen old women sat at two long tables under the crucifix, in good wool dresses and black felt hats.
A silver urn stood between them, and a tray of kolaches the size of saucers.
They stopped talking when I came in.
The tall one, who had told me in October that they only watch, pointed at the chairs across from her.
"Sit, Mathilde," she said. "Sit, Doctor."
We sat.
Cade's knees did not fit under the table, so he turned his chair and put one boot on the bench rung.
Nobody offered him a kolache.
Then the shorter one took one from the tray, apricot, and set it on his plate without looking at him.
