Chapter 11: The Iron Box
The gate horns blew from the hill, three long notes, and the heavy gates swung shut across the valley road.
Gareth's guards ran for the posts.
He picked Cora up in both arms, and she sobbed into his coat with her burned hands held out in front of her.
"The cup poisoned her mind," he told the ring in a voice that cracked and then steadied. "Look at her. She is raving. The rite was never meant to be turned on a girl."
"She confessed to the Goddess," a woman called from the crowd.
"A girl in agony will say anything. I should know."
He looked at the old wolves of the pack.
"The rite is void. Cora is under the Alpha's protection until she has been healed and has her wits again. Anyone who touches her answers to me."
"Gareth," Rowan said.
His voice was quiet.
"Be careful what you say next. Three Alphas heard her."
"Three outsiders heard a sick girl," Gareth said. "This is my pack, my house and my law."
He turned and carried her down the hill.
His guards closed behind him in a wall.
Rowan's wolves moved to follow, and I raised a hand.
"Wait."
They looked at Rowan, and he nodded.
"If we storm his house tonight, he'll say we murdered a sick girl," I said. "Half this pack will believe it."
"They heard what she said."
"They heard it," I said. "That's not the same as saying it themselves."
It was the first time in two days I had been calm.
I turned to the Great Elder.
He was leaning on his staff at the edge of the stones.
He looked at me for a long time, and then he crooked one finger.
