Chapter 21: Take the Girl

Linnea's POV

I said the old words of the bond into the moonlight, and every one of them cost me.

*I take you as my mate. What is mine is yours.*

Gareth's eyes shut. He breathed out, long and slow, and I watched his shoulders drop.

He thought he had won.

The rubble of the pillar began to hum.

It was a low sound, felt in the soles of my feet.

The broken white stones turned silver one after another.

The hollow in the middle filled with light.

The thread between us came back.

I felt it snap taut in my chest, the old hot cord I had torn out in front of three hundred wolves.

It reached for me, and I let it.

He tasted my pain through it, and I felt him taste it. He smiled, eyes still shut.

"There," he whispered. "There. That's my Luna."

I had held the Goddess's light in my arms for days.

I had clamped my fists on it and kept it from burning another house.

It was five years of moonlight and every offering I had knelt through.

It had been built to run to the Alpha's side.

I opened my hands.

The light went down the cord and into him.

Gareth's eyes flew open.

White fire poured out of my chest, into the bond, and straight into him.

He staggered back. His sword clattered on the stones.

"What are you doing?"

"Giving you what you built the pillar for," I said.

"Stop it!"

"It's the Goddess's blessing. It goes to the one who stands at the Alpha's side. You wanted it."
