Chapter 14: What He Owed

I did not go back.

I carried Tuck down to Hesper's den and set him on a stool.

I stood at her hearth with my back to the room.

My hands would not stop shaking.

"Go on," Hesper said, stirring her pine pot. "Be angry. It's good for the blood."

"He knew."

"He did."

"He kissed me on that table, knowing."

"He did that too." She tapped the spoon on the rim.

"A man can be a fool and a good father in one afternoon.

Don't confuse being angry with being finished."

"I am not finished with anything," I said.

"Good."

Tuck watched us with his thumb in his mouth.

"Is Papa coming for soup?"

I knelt and tucked his curls back.

"Not today, sweetheart."

"Is he in trouble?"

"Yes."

"Is it a big trouble?"

"It's the biggest he's ever made," I said, and Tuck nodded with great seriousness, as if he'd suspected that.

At dusk a runner came to say the council was meeting at the stone ring, and the Marrow house was called.
