Chapter 9: Eagle Creek, October

I woke up in his bed, with his arm across my waist and the gray dog on my feet.

The window was white with early light.

Dane was already awake.

He was lying on his side, watching me, with his eyes very clear.

"You stayed," he said.

"The lock's on the inside of the guest room."

"It is."

"I'm very comfortable here."

He did not smile, but something around his mouth gave.

"Day four," he said.

"Don't count."

"I wrote it down."

"You did not."

"On my hand." He held it up, and there was a four in black pen on the back of it.

I laughed before I could stop it.

It was the first time I had laughed since the clinic, and he heard it, and his eyes went dark.

He rolled me under him with one slow movement.

I pulled his head down.

This time there was no kitchen counter and no hurry.

He kissed my collarbone, and my ribs, and the soft place below my navel.

I opened my legs for him without being asked.

He eased in and held there, buried deep, his forehead against mine, both of us breathing.

"You feel that?" he said.

"Yes."

"The mark. It's warm."

"I know."

He started to move, long and deep, and I met every stroke.

I had my heels at the small of his back.

I held onto his shoulders.

I said his name, and then I said it again because I liked how his body answered.
