Chapter 11: What He Knew

Wells set me down off the table.

He tucked his shirt back in. He bent and picked up my apron and handed it to me.

His ears were red.

"I can go," he said.

"Don't you dare."

The bell rang.

Kellan came in with the roses hanging from his fist. Red ones, still in the plastic sleeve, with a price sticker on it.

Seven ninety-nine.

He looked at the water on the floor. At my hair. At Wells.

"Seriously?" he said. "The wedding planner?"

"We're closed," I said.

"Bren. I need five minutes."

"You had seven years."

He held out the roses.

I didn't take them.

He stood there holding them out until it got embarrassing, and then he laid them on the counter next to my register.

Next to the framed loan receipt.

He saw it. His jaw moved.

"You paid it off."

"I did."

"How?"

"I sold my car and worked," I said. "You should try it sometime."

Wells, at the back by the cooler, made a sound like a cough.

Kellan's eyes flicked to him.

"Can we have some privacy?"

"No," Wells said.

"This is between me and my fiancée."

"She's not your fiancée," Wells said. "I was there. I ran the screen."

Kellan's face went tight.

Then he turned his back on Wells and stepped close to me, and his voice went soft and low.

The voice from our bed.

"Bren. Larissa doesn't mean anything to me."

I laughed. I couldn't help it.

"She's wearing your ring."

"I know. I know. It's a mess. Things moved so fast after the wedding, and my father..." He rubbed his face. "I'll call it off. Tonight. If you'll come home."

"Home."

"Our home. Your things are still there. I didn't touch anything."
