"Then I'll find it," I said.
"Finding it is my job," he said. "You do your flowers."
Seventeen days.
I spent them making four hundred white roses look like somebody loved Larissa Delancey.
The Thurlow club sits on a hill on the Main Line, behind a stone wall and a gate with a man in it.
On Friday, August twenty-first, I drove up the hill in the Bradshaw van at two in the afternoon with Wells at the wheel and sixty buckets in the back.
The man at the gate checked his list twice.
"Florist," Wells said. "And planner."
"I've got a Pomeroy here," the man said. He looked at me. "Like the..."
"Yes," I said. "Like the video."
He let us through without another word.
The rehearsal dinner was on the terrace.
Linen the color of buttermilk. Low arrangements of white garden roses and jasmine, because Larissa had seen jasmine at my wedding and decided she'd thought of it first.
I set them one by one.
Wells walked the terrace with his clipboard and his earpiece, counting chairs under his breath.
Every time he passed me, he touched the small of my back. Just for a second.
