Chapter 11: The Empty Safe

Jonas was at the bakery window at six the next morning, with no croissant and a photocopied folder under his arm.

Wren let him in and locked the door behind him.

"Term four," he said. "I'm telling you first."

He put the folder on a flour sack. He did not sit.

"My mother has an agreement with your name on it. It says you married me for money, and that my mother paid your mother's care."

"I never signed that."

"I know." His voice cracked on the second word.

"I read it all last night. It names a room I only arranged after the wedding, and it's dated five months before."

Wren took the page from him and read it standing up.

Her name was on the line. The slant was almost hers.

"That isn't mine," she said. "The W is wrong. I close the top."

"I believe you."

"Do you? Because I heard what you said at dinner. You said you needed to see where it goes."

"I said a lot of things I can't take back." He looked at the floor.

"Let me take back one. I believe you."

It was not enough, and she knew it.

But it was something, and she held it a moment longer than she meant to.

"It's in her safe," Wren said. "The original. And the others."

"Camille told me about the safe."

"Camille told you?"

"She called back at midnight. I'm quoting her."

"I owe three women an apology, and one of them is her."

Wren nearly smiled.
