Chapter 13: The W Is Closed

Wren got as far as the second lamp on the drive before Jonas caught up with her.

He had run. His bow tie was gone and his collar hung open.

"Wren, stop. Please."

"Term four," she said, without turning around. "You don't stand at my window. This is a driveway, so I'll give you one minute."

"One minute is enough."

"It isn't. Start."

He came around in front of her, so that she had to look at him.

"My mother put the last page in front of me at breakfast in March," he said. "Your name was at the bottom, and a payment schedule."

"And you believed it."

"I believed it for two months, and I never asked you. I went to work every day and came home and slept with my back to you."

"I noticed."

"I know you did." His breath came hard. "If you said yes, I couldn't stand it. If you said no, I'd have to tell you what I thought of you."

"So you made me a test."

"Camille landed, and I thought, if she fights, then it was never about money."

"You thought I'd fight." Wren heard her own voice go small. "I signed because you made it easy to lose you, Jonas."

"Wren."

"Do you know what the second year was like? My mother's doctor called a meeting about her diagnosis. I asked you to come. I asked you twice."

His face changed. He remembered.

"I sent the driver," he said.

"You sent the driver."

"I had the board that morning. I told myself you'd rather not take the bus."
