Chapter 6: Facedown on the Table

"Five weeks," Wren said. "Six on Monday."

The bakery was empty except for the baker, who had gone very busy with a tray at the back.

Jonas set the bottle down on the counter between them.

"It's mine," he said.

"Don't you dare ask me that."

"I wasn't asking."

"Good."

"I was telling you I know it's mine." His voice was not steady. "Were you going to tell me?"

Wren looked at him.

She had practiced a speech for this, on Hallie's couch, at two in the morning. It was gone.

"I tried," she said. "At dinner."

"You didn't say a word."

"I put the clinic page on the table by my plate, facedown. It was there for the whole meal."

Jonas's face went still.

"You never turned it over. You looked at the pen."

"I thought it was..." He stopped. "I didn't look."

"No," Wren said. "You didn't."

The bell above the door jingled.

Jonas turned. It was the man in the work jacket, back for his coffee, with his hat in his hand.

He took in the two of them and said, "Congratulations?"

"Not now," Jonas and Wren said together.

The man backed out and shut the door.

Jonas drew a breath. "I'll stop the divorce. There's still time to file a withdrawal."
