Chapter 9: Room 14B

Wren called him at six that evening, which she had never done in three years of marriage.

Jonas answered before the first ring finished.

"Term four," she said. Her voice was flat and shaky. "I'm calling first."

"Where are you?"

"On a bus. Your mother was at Fernwood today. She had me barred from my mother's room."

"She did what?"

"My mother knew her on sight, Jonas. Down to the pen."

"She also says my mother signed something new last Tuesday. Find out what."

Jonas shut his eyes.

"I need to know what's in the folder you two keep," Wren said.

"The one you've never shown me. I think I signed something I never read."

"I'll find out tonight."

"Don't find out. Tell me."

"I will," he said. "I promise I will."

She hung up without answering.

His mother kept her study on the second floor of the east wing, behind a door with a brass plate.

He knocked once and walked in.

Margaret was at her desk in a green silk robe, writing a note with her fountain pen. She did not look up.

"Darling. You missed dinner again."

"I want to see the agreement."

The pen stopped.

"Which agreement?"
