Chapter 6: The Wrong Slide

On Monday morning Tomoya's deck was wrong, and he knew who had done it.

Section 2 had gathered in the long meeting room for the review before Osaka.

Chihiro sat with her notebook, and Gojo sat at the head of the table with his coffee.

Tomoya stood at the screen, clicked to slide nine, and read the store count for Osaka.

Two hundred and forty-one.

It had been two hundred and fourteen when he went home.

He had checked it three times.

He knew his own numbers, and someone had changed a digit.

"Is something wrong, Arisaka?" Gojo asked.

"Yes."

Tomoya turned around.

Ren sat at the far end of the table with his arms folded and his reading glasses pushed up into his hair.

"You were in my folder," Tomoya said.

"I wasn't."

"Someone swapped two digits in my deck so I'd walk in front of the director with a bad number. Who has the shared drive password?"

"Everyone has the shared drive password," Chihiro said carefully.

"Who needed to sabotage me?"

"I didn't sabotage you."

"That's rich."

"Arisaka."

"You want the chair so badly that you'd go through my files at midnight?" Tomoya's voice cracked on the last word, because the room was perfectly silent and thirteen people were looking at him.

"Senpai," Chihiro said, standing up, "can I see the file history?"

"What?"

She leaned over his laptop, clicked, and her face changed.

"Version log," she said. "Sunday, 2:07 a.m., edited by Kisaragi. Changed slide nine from 214 to 241. Comment: none."

Tomoya stared at her.

"The correct number is 241," she said quietly. "The company's own store list says 241, as of the first of the month. You had the old file. He fixed it."

The room was still.

Tomoya looked at Ren.

Ren hadn't moved.

He looked back with those narrow black eyes, not angry and not triumphant.

He was just waiting, the way he had waited in the pink light for Tomoya to say go.

"You could have told me," Tomoya said. He barely had a voice.

"You'd have said I was meddling."

"You didn't leave a note."

"You'd have said I was showing off."

"I'd have," Tomoya said, and shut his mouth, because Ren was right, and everyone knew it.

Gojo coughed.
