Chapter 18: Duffel Bag

The knock came after midnight.

Linus was lying on the sleeping bag in Dag's room with a book on his chest.

He knew who it was before Dag opened the door.

Mattias stood in the hall with a duffel bag over one shoulder and snow melting in his hair.

He looked thinner.

He did not say anything.

Dag looked at him, then back at Linus, then at the duffel.

"I'm going to my cousin's," Dag said, taking his coat off the hook.

"She lives forty minutes away, and she makes pancakes, and I have been meaning to visit her for a year."

"Dag," Linus said.

"Key's on the desk."

Dag pulled his boots on.

"Lock the door. Don't use the good towels."

He squeezed past Mattias into the corridor, and he put one big hand on his shoulder for a moment as he went.

The door closed.

The radiator ticked.

Mattias stayed on the threshold.

"My dad had my card cancelled," he said. "The locker room's locked for the break. I didn't have anywhere to go."

"You could have gone anywhere," Linus said.

"I wanted to come here."

"Why?"

"I don't know how to be anywhere else," Mattias said.

Linus sat up.

He took off his glasses and put them on the floor, because he did not want to see this clearly.

"Come in," he said.

Mattias came in and put the bag down.
