Chapter 20: Be Loud

Mattias listened to the whole recording once.

He sat on the edge of the bed in his boxers with Linus's phone in his hand.

His own voice said "tire" and "sorry" into the silent room.

Then he gave the phone back, got up, and started packing.

"What are you doing?" Linus asked.

"Leaving."

"Where?" Linus asked.

"I don't know. The lake. Alaska."

Mattias pulled his duffel out from under the bed.

"It's everywhere, Linus. Dag's coming over, which means it's the whole floor. By tonight it'll be the whole school."

"Mattias," Linus said.

"Don't."

"Put the bag down."

"I can't sit in this room and wait to be laughed at," Mattias said.

"Then don't wait."

Dag arrived soon after with his coat buttoned wrong.

He stood in the doorway, out of breath.

"There are four hundred comments," Dag said. "Most of them are idiots. Some of them are great."

"Read me the great ones," Mattias said, flat.

Dag read three.

A girl from the swim team had written that her brother had it, and no one at their school had ever known.

A sophomore on the debate team wrote that he had been hiding a reading problem since sixth grade.
