Chapter 22: Open Session
The Student Union ballroom held four hundred chairs, and every one was taken.
Students stood three deep along the walls.
Linus sat in the front row with Dag on one side and a cold coffee in his hands.
He could feel four hundred people waiting.
At the long table on the stage sat the board.
There was the Dean with his gray mustache and a professor in a bow tie.
There was a woman from the registrar's office, a student representative, and the professor in the green scarf.
Brock Coyle sat in the third row, arms crossed.
He had not looked at Linus once.
Gustav Pehrson stood at the back of the hall in his charcoal overcoat, alone against the wall.
Mattias had seen him come in.
Linus had watched him see it, and watched his chin go up.
"Mr. Pehrson," the Dean said. "You asked for this session to be open. You may address the board."
Mattias walked up the steps to the podium.
He had a single yellow page in his hand.
Linus had typed it in a large font from Mattias's dictation, over six nights.
